Eliot Dudik will be having an opening reception for an exhibition of photographs from his series ROAD ENDS IN WATER at ART+CAYCE in Cayce, South Carolina, on Friday, September 9th, from 6:00pm - 9:00pm.

Here’s more information about ROAD ENDS IN WATER from Dudik’s project statement: "The main highway, U.S Route 17, that bisects South Carolina’s 'low country,' north to south, is being widened to accommodate commerce, tourists, and urban refugees. Not only are many homes, some historic, disappearing before the tracked blades of expansion, but also the new, faster thoroughfare encourages greater disregard and obliviousness to the charm and culture of the basin harbors. This collection of images and thoughts is a tribute to, and an acknowledgment of, the respect that the modest souls of this region, obscure from the mainstream, deserve for their tenacity, good humor, social commitment, and acceptance of the ebb and flow of the often incomprehensible vagaries of existence."

In fewer than two weeks, Jacksonville, FL, will host it’s inaugural 2-day photography festival, PHOTOJAX 2011. According to the festival’s website: "PHOTOJAX 2011 offers a diversity of photography related exhibitions, artist receptions, portfolio reviews, and a community cell phone image projection exhibit hosted by various venues throughout Jacksonville. PHOTOJAX is a not-for-profit organization coordinated by a group of dedicated volunteers in conjunction with the Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville, a cultural resource of The University of North Florida. The festival brings together photographers, photography enthusiasts, collectors, educators, galleries, museums and the general public to explore all aspects of the medium by answering this year’s thematic question: ‘What is Photography?’"

Among the photographers showing work during the festival are One, One Thousand featured artists Jeff Rich and Alexander Diaz.

In collaboration with the PHOTOJAX photography festival, Alexander Diaz curated "No Place in Particular: Images of the American Landscape." The photography exhibition investigates the visual, societal, and ecological consequences of postwar development, and it is a component of the museum’s celebration of photography this fall. Opening today, September, 7, at the UNF Gallery at The Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville (MOCA), the exhibit features artists including Jeff Rich, Jeremiah Ariaz, Bryon Darby, Matt Siber, Steven B. Smith, Amy Stein, Michael Vahrenwald, and Scott Wheeler.

The show will be open from September 7 — November 6, 2011.

Kathleen Robbins will be having an opening reception for an exhibition of photographs from her series Into the Flatland at Beard and Riser Studios in Greenwood, Mississippi, on Tuesday, September 6th, from 5:00pm - 8:00pm.

Here’s more information about Into the Flatland from Robbins’ project statement: "The photographs in this series were made during regular trips home to visit family over a period of several years. These are the people I love most in a place that I am deeply connected to. I chose to leave the Mississippi Delta for many of the same reasons anyone ever chooses to leave a rural area. This is land that my family has inhabited for generations, and I am pulled to this place in a way that I am not able to fully articulate. It is not my nostalgia alone that creates this longing; it is that of my mother and my mother’s mother."

Lauren Henkin will be having an opening reception for a show of new work at The Newspace Center For Photography in Portland, Oregon, on Friday, September 2nd, from 6:00pm - 9:00pm.

Henkin will be debuting her new portfolio, Growth, "a body of work about what survives, both the wanted and unwanted." Lauren will have 100+ images on display from four bodies of work showing, "Growth," "Remnants," "The Lines Between Us," and "Fieldnotes." The four have never been exhibited in person anywhere before, and three of the bodies of work have not even been shown online.

The show will be open starting Friday, September 2, 2011.

Since opening it’s doors in 2009, the Jennifer Schwartz Gallery has established itself as an indispensable center for viewing fine-art photography in Atlanta, GA. The gallery represents Southern photographers including Jeff Rich, Jennifer Shaw, Lori Vrba, Kael Alford, and Lisette de Boisblanc, and upcoming exhibits at the gallery will include work by photographers such as Kathleen Robbins and Dave Anderson. In her latest venture, gallery owner Jennifer Schwartz has started a new website dedicated to exhibiting and selling new works by photographers.

The Ten features ten photographs by a single photographer every month. According to the site’s mission statement, "the artwork you see is only available on The Ten and will never be for sale in any other location. One size, one price, one opportunity to purchase. Ever. Collectors are guaranteed premium, signed photographs that have true value. A new Ten collection is unveiled on the tenth of each month. The editions are relatively small (25), the price is relatively low ($250), and the collectibility is incredibly high."

Fraction Magazine’s first exhibition, Fraction Magazine : Three Years in the Making, is opening this evening at the RayKo Photo Center in San Francisco. The exhibition is curated by David Bram, the founder and editor of Fraction, and features photographs from the past 28 issues of the online magazine (including photographs from four photographers who have also graced the webpages of One, One Thousand.

Hollis Bennett, Eliot Dudik, Kathleen Robbins, and Michael Sebastian, will be exhibiting alongside Karen Kuehn, Polly Chandler, Samuel Portera, Norman Mauskopf, Allison V Smith, Kirk Gittings, Michael Itkoff, Ken Rosenthal, David Ondrik, David Maisel, Phil Toledano, Liz Kuball, Susan Hayre Thelwell, Emily Shur, Geoffrey Ellis, David Taylor, Tabitha Soren, David Rochkind, Kerry Mansfield, Meg Griffiths, Susan Burnstine, Antone Dolezal, Jesse Burke, Clay Lipsky, Tricia Lawless Murray, and Josef Jacques. Dana Mueller and Eliot Dudik will be showing work as a part of EXPOSURE 2011 beginning tomorrow, July 21.

EXPOSURE 2011 is The Photographic Resource Center (PRC) at Boston University’s 16th annual juried exhibition. The juror for EXPOSURE 2011 was Whitney Johnson, director of photography at The New Yorker.

From the exhibition statement:
"The artists featured in EXPOSURE 2011 take a strong interest in the human condition. Probing portraits, vibrant social interactions, historically-inflected landscapes, and provocative situations are all present in Johnson’s selections. The placement of each project encourages the viewer to find connections between the artists’ subjects. Although the show encompasses wildly different stylistic approaches, each project flirts with documentary photography, shedding light on the human experience in unique ways. However, the photographers seem more intent on introspection, discovery, and questioning than pointing out conditions in need of change."

The show will be open from July 21 - August 20, 2011.
The opening reception is July 21, 6:30 - 8 p.m.

The Photographer as Tourist, and the Tourist as Subject’ at Rick Wester Fine Art features photographs focusing on the itinerant essence of photography. Works included speak to Jackson’s definition by exposing the tourist that resides in every photographer, and the tourist as a perennial target for the lens."

We’re very happy to share the news that Kathleen Robbins will be participating in the upcoming group exhibition "Mississippi Photographs, 1860s-Present" at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans.

According to the museum, the show will be a survey of Mississippi photography spanning more than 150 years. Images will "portray the cultural, social, political and environmental changes that have shaped and defined the state, emphasizing the deep ties that exist between the people of Mississippi and the land." Among the photographers included in the exhibition are Kathleen Robbins, Eudora Welty, William Eggleston, Jack Kotz, Stuart Klipper, and Bruce West.

"Mississippi Photographs, 1860s-Present" opens on August 6 and will be on view through September 18, 2011. Congratulations to Kathleen on this great achievement!

The landings where we join the river are likewise shaped by our activities. Whether we launch a kayak or powerboat or just clear a spot to cast a line we are agents of change and leave our mark. I love the landings of the Waccamaw and the Little Pee Dee rivers in South Carolina. There we have come across waiting fishermen, proud brides, excited children and bemused locals. They are dotted with reminders—oyster shells and beer cans, a forgotten sneaker, stray cats and the tracks of countless boat loving dogs. These are the sites of beginnings and endings… The Rhode Island vistas and seascapes are poetic memories of places observed. They serve as Proustian references, fragile madeleines which unleash a flood of pleasant imagery."
