The deadline is approaching fast for the Michael P. Smith Fund For Documentary Photography (MPS Fund).

Michael P. Smith (1937-2008) was a New Orleans native and award-winning professional freelance photographer. Smith photographed every New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival from its inception in 1970 until his retirement in 2004, when he was honored with a major exhibition at the Fair Grounds. In a brilliant career that spanned more than four decades, Smith was an inspiration, a role model, and a mentor to many photographers in New Orleans and beyond.

Created by the New Orleans Photo Alliance (NOPA) to honor Smith’s life and work, the MPS Fund is open to both emerging and established photographers residing in the Gulf Coast states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. Don’t miss your opportunity to apply.

What you get: $5000
Who can apply: Photographers residing in the Gulf Coast states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida
How much you pay: Application fee: $25 + NOPA membership: $60.
Who’s gonna see your work: Three preliminary jurors will select ten finalists. They are Stacey D. Clarkson, Art Director of Harper’s Magazine; Ed Kashi, photographer and member of VII; and Susan Sterner, Director of New Media Photojournalism at the Corcoran College of Art + Design. Kevin Miller, Director of the Southeast Museum of Photography, will select the 2013 recipient from the ten finalists.
When’s the deadline: March 29, 2013

In 2012, Kael Alford won the grant for her project "Bottom of da Boot: Losing the Coast of Louisiana." Brett Abbott, the Curator of Photography at the High Museum of Art, selected Alford’s project from ten finalists.

To learn more about the MPS Fund, please visit the New Orleans Photo Alliance’s Michael P. Smith Fund page. For additional information, please contact Lori Waselchuk at 225-907-6695.

Also, be sure to check out the rest of the New Orleans Photo Alliance’s website. NOPA is a diverse group of photographers who joined forces in 2006 to create unity and opportunity for photographers in the Gulf South. Since its inception, NOPA has sponsored photographic exhibitions, workshops, and educational programs. It also coordinates PhotoNOLA, the annual photography festival held each December at venues throughout New Orleans.

We began publishing photographs on One, One Thousand in November 2010. Since then – and thanks to continued support from photographers, readers, and the greater photography community – we’ve had the pleasure of sharing more than 40 portfolios and projects. They’ve all been made in the South, and we believe they offer unique perspectives on both the complexities of modern Southerness and the diversity of art coming out our region in the first part of this new century.

To celebrate our 2 year anniversary, we’re organizing a special January 2013 edition of One, One Thousand. An amazing jury will be selecting a group of 4 photographers to be featured on our site.

2 Year Anniversary Jury:
Tom Griggs, Editor, fototazo
Maggie Kennedy, Photography Director, Garden & Gun
Jennifer Shaw, Coordinator, PhotoNOLA
Aline Smithson, Editor, Lenscratch

As always, submissions are free. Deadline for submissions is November 30, 2012. Please follow the guidelines on our submissions page or on the spec sheet below.

Last year, Jonathan Traviesa (who will be featured on One, One Thousand in March) won the grant for his project of environmental portraits, "New Portraits in New Orleans." The MPS Fund’s inaugural juror, Jeff L. Rosenheim, Curator, Department of Photographs at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, selected Traviesa’s project from ten finalists.

I’m proud to write that One, One Thousand is well into its third month featuring photography online. We’ve already had the privilege of bringing some really outstanding work to our readers (most recently, photographs by David Simonton and Joshua Greer), and we’re not going to be stopping anytime soon.

When we conceived of One, One Thousand, we wanted it to function in two primary ways:
1. As an excellent place to look at photographs made in the South.
2. As a truly useful resource for all photographers.

In the spirit of that second goal, we’re going to periodically collect information about grants, exhibitions, residencies, and open calls that might interest you. This time we’ve got details about a grant for Gulf Coasters (not this kind) and both an exhibition and residency opportunity in Woodstock, New York:
