February 2012 Featured Photographer : Leslie Burns

According to Ralph Eugene Meatyard, the masks worn by the subjects in his photographs were meant to function like billboards "once you get past [them] then you can see into the past (forest, etc.), the present, & the future," he wrote. In a similar fashion, Leslie Burns’ project "Frank" centers around a CPR mask, but the photographs also invite viewers to disregard their preconceptions of identity and consider the similarities between people. "The greatest thing a human soul ever does in this world is to see something, and tell what it saw in a plain way. Hundreds of people can talk for one who can think, but thousands can think for one who can see. To see clearly is poetry, prophecy, and religion, all in one." John Ruskin
